Dengue Outbreak Worsens in Daudkandi: 80 New Cases in 24 Hours, Death Toll Rises to 9

Daudkandi, Cumilla: The dengue situation in Daudkandi upazila of Cumilla is deteriorating rapidly. In just the last 24 hours—from 10 AM Tuesday to 10 AM Wednesday—80 new dengue cases were confirmed out of 383 blood samples tested in both public and private hospitals across the upazila.

According to the Upazila Health Department, nearly 2,000 people—including women, men, and children—have been infected with dengue fever since 1 June. Since 19 May, the death toll has now reached 9 due to dengue-related complications.

Among the latest fatalities is Khokon Mia (55), a local businessman from Ward-9, Daulddi village under Daudkandi Municipality. He passed away at a private hospital in Dhaka on Tuesday morning while undergoing treatment. His son Sabbir Ahmed told Prothom Alo that his father had been diagnosed with dengue on 22 June, following a blood test, and was admitted to Islami Bank Hospital, Kakrail, where he later succumbed to the illness.

The outbreak is believed to have originated in Donarchar village, located within the municipality. Fokhrul Alam Sarkar, a resident and former governing body member of Daudkandi Adarsha Pilot High School, stated,

"The dengue outbreak started from Donarchar. The first death also occurred here. People are still not aware. Garbage has not been cleaned. My two sons are infected and currently undergoing treatment. There is growing panic among locals."
