Based on the July Charter, Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan, Khelafat Majlis, and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis are taking to the streets with several common demands, including holding the national election next February. The parties will begin a three-day initial protest program starting Thursday.
At a press conference held Monday at Jamaat’s central office, Naib Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher announced the program. Meanwhile, Khelafat Majlis, Islami Andolan, and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis also held separate press conferences to express support for the demands.
Key demands of the joint movement:
Hold the national election based on the July Charter
Implement the PR system in both houses of parliament
Ensure equal opportunities for all parties and candidates to guarantee free, fair, and credible elections
Ensure accountability for the previous government’s atrocities, genocide, and corruption
Halt the activities of the National Party and the 14-party alliance
The protests are scheduled as follows: September 18 in Dhaka, September 19 in divisional cities, and September 26 in district and sub-district areas.
Pir of Charmonai, Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim, said, “If the government does not announce elections under the PR system, we will join the movement with like-minded parties. Our main goal is to ensure lasting reform and transparency in elections.”
The parties believe that the current interim government is biased towards BNP. They argue that without implementing the July Charter, elections cannot be free and fair. In this context, the movement aims to unite Muslim votes and create political pressure on the government ahead of the upcoming national election.
