Jahangir Sheikh (60), a farmer, was killed in an attack stemming from a land dispute in Lohagara Upazila, Narail. His son, Nahid Sheikh, was also seriously injured in the assault. The incident occurred around 11:30 AM today, Wednesday, in Bahirpara village of the upazila. Jahangir Sheikh was a resident of Bahirpara village, Lohagara Upazila.
Jahangir's family alleges that there had been a long-standing land dispute between Jahangir Sheikh's family and Kawsar Sheikh's family, both from Bahirpara village in Kashipur Union, Lohagara Upazila. Despite multiple village arbitration meetings, no resolution was reached.
This morning, Jahangir went to cultivate the disputed land in Bahirpara field with his son Nahid. At that time, Kawsar's people, armed with local weapons, attacked them. The assailants hacked Jahangir and his son indiscriminately, leaving them wounded. Jahangir died on the spot. Nahid was rescued in a critical condition and initially taken to Narail Sadar Hospital. He has since been transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment.
Locals reported that one person from Kawsar's side was also injured, but no detailed information about him was available. Kawsar Sheikh and his family members have been in hiding since the incident, so no statement could be obtained from their side.
Lohagara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shariful Islam, who inspected the scene this afternoon, stated, "There was a dispute between two parties over land. When one party went to work on the land, the other party attacked. Both sides suffered injuries. A farmer named Jahangir was killed at the scene. His body has been recovered and sent to Narail Sadar Hospital for post-mortem."
The OC further added that operations are underway to apprehend all individuals involved in the incident, and additional police forces have been deployed to the area.
