Family members of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July movement, have expressed deep frustration over the lack of visible progress in his murder trial, as the nation observes his first death anniversary today. On this "July Shaheed Day," Ramzan Ali, Abu Sayeed's elder brother and the plaintiff in the murder case, could not hold back his tears after offering prayers at Sayeed's grave at their village home in Madankhali, Pirganj Upazila, Rangpur.

Ramzan Ali stated, "My brother sacrificed his life protesting discrimination, and through that struggle, the people of this country have gained a new kind of freedom. Today marks one year, but there has been no judicial progress. People at home and abroad know my brother was killed by police bullets. This truth is not hidden. Yet where is the justice?"

He asked, "Whom can I share this sorrow with? Where do I turn? I find no words to express it." He added that last year, the chief adviser, chief justice, and other high-ranking officials had visited their home. "Everyone came, expressed sympathy, and gave assurances. But we want only one thing — justice for my brother's murder. That hasn't even begun yet."

Ramzan Ali believes that Abu Sayeed's sacrifice gave a generation the courage to speak up. Emphasizing the need for constitutional reform, he said, "The country has changed. The constitution needs to change too. Without that, fair elections or citizens' rights cannot be ensured. The light that Abu Sayeed has kindled is the light for building a Bangladesh free from discrimination."

Meanwhile, students, teachers, and staff of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) gathered on campus today at 10:00 AM wearing black badges and brought out a mourning procession. The procession moved through the Modern Mor area of Rangpur city before returning to campus. Following a rally there, the foundation work for the Abu Sayeed's Memorial Arch was inaugurated at the university's main gate. Two other initiatives include the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Museum on campus and Shaheed Abu Sayeed Square at Park Mor in front of the university. These projects were officially inaugurated by Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul.

It is noteworthy that the investigation into the Abu Sayeed murder case has already concluded, and the prosecution has received the investigation report. The report implicates 30 individuals, including members of law enforcement agencies. However, the charges have not yet been formally filed with the tribunal.
