Netflix’s popular Regency drama ‘Bridgerton’ returns in a new season with new characters, romance, and social messages. In Season Four, viewers will witness the complexities of love, relationships, and women’s self-determination.

In the new storyline, Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd) and her husband John Sterling (Victor Alli) face sexual challenges in their first days of marriage. During the Regency era, unmarried upper-class women were kept away from sexual knowledge, while men had the freedom to gain legitimate sexual experience. This inequality affects Francesca and John’s marital life.

Hannah Dodd said, “Francesca wants to obtain sexual knowledge from her female colleagues. It shows how women had to find ways to gain physical and sexual knowledge when they were denied experience.”

Additionally, new characters Sophie (Erin Ha) and Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) bring a more thrilling romance. Benedict becomes attracted to a mysterious woman at a masked ball. Lady Araminta Ghan (Katie Leung) is introduced as a new character, adding complexity regarding dignity and power.

The internal storyline also explores Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) and Lady Danbury’s (Adjoa Andoh) friendship and power struggles. When Lady Danbury wishes to spend her time independently, tensions with Queen Charlotte arise. Andoh commented, “Women often hold themselves back for others’ benefit, but expressing personal choices and feelings is crucial.”

Writer Julia Quinn noted that while Francesca’s character may not be aesthetically neurodivergent, autistic viewers can relate to her experiences. Season Four highlights romance as well as women’s independence, relationship honesty, and social challenges.
