Famous Scottish actor Alexander ‘Sandy’ Morton has died at the age of 81. He became widely known for playing the character “Golly Mackenzie” in the popular television series Monarch of the Glen.
Born in Glasgow, he appeared in all 64 episodes of the BBC Scotland series from 2000 to 2005. In the series, he won viewers’ hearts as the loyal ghillie of the Highland estate “Glenbogle.”
Throughout his long acting career, Morton worked in films and television in various roles. He was known for portraying tough characters and villains in productions such as Carter, The Silent Scream, Valhalla Rising, and Take the High Road.
Trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London, he was also active in stage theatre. He co-founded the Raindog Theatre Company with Robert Carlyle and Caroline Paterson.
Starting his career in the 1970s, Morton worked extensively in both television and theatre. He played the character Andy Semple in the Scottish TV series Take the High Road for 14 years (1980–1994).
His notable stage roles included Macbeth, Robert Burns, and William Wallace. He also appeared in River City and Shetland.
Following his death, colleagues and actors expressed deep sorrow. Actor Robert Carlyle said Morton was an exceptional artist and a deeply kind person who had a major influence on his career.
Actor Gavin Mitchell described him as a warm, wise, and generous person, saying working with him was a unique experience.
Actor Tom Urie said Morton was a gentle and beloved man whose death has created a major void in the arts community.
