BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman to hold meeting with the Chief Adviser today

BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman is scheduled to meet today (Thursday) with the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The meeting is expected to take place in the afternoon at the Chief Adviser’s residence at the state guest house Jamuna in the capital.

A source at the Chief Adviser’s Office said that discussions during the meeting may include the current political situation, election arrangements, and the ongoing reform process. Although the meeting is formal, it is being viewed as an important political engagement between the two leaders.

Previously, in June last year, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus and Tarique Rahman held their first private meeting in London, United Kingdom. At that time, Tarique Rahman was serving as the acting chairman of the BNP. After that meeting, held at a hotel in London, both sides jointly shared the outcomes of their discussions.

After staying in the United Kingdom for 17 years, Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on December 25 last year. Immediately after his return, he spoke by telephone with the Chief Adviser at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

Following the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia on December 30, changes occurred in the party’s leadership. On January 9, the BNP National Standing Committee unanimously appointed Tarique Rahman as the party chairman. This will be his first direct meeting with the Chief Adviser since assuming the role.

According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, the 13th National Parliamentary Election is set to be held on February 12. At the same time, there are plans to hold a referendum on reform initiatives and the implementation of the July National Charter. In this context, today’s meeting is being considered significant in terms of the upcoming election and political consensus.
