Following the election, Bangladesh formally assumed the Vice-Chair role during the first meeting of the Commission’s 20th session. During the event, the Bangladeshi delegation expressed gratitude to the Commission members and reaffirmed Bangladesh’s continued cooperation and commitment to peacebuilding activities.
Bangladesh stated that it will play an active role in implementing the Commission’s future plans to establish lasting peace and sustainable development in conflict-affected countries. Morocco was elected Chair of the Commission at the same meeting. In addition to Bangladesh, Germany, Brazil, and Croatia were elected as Vice-Chairs. Representatives of the UN General Assembly President and Secretary-General were present, emphasizing the importance and role of the Peacebuilding Commission.
The UN Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports post-conflict countries in consolidating peace and reconstruction. The Commission consists of 31 member states selected from the General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council, and UN’s top troop- and fund-contributing countries.
Since its establishment in 2005, Bangladesh has actively participated in the Commission. Previously, Bangladesh served as Chair in 2012 and 2022, and as Vice-Chair in 2013 and 2023, playing a significant role in international peacebuilding.
