Tension arose around the local office of the Bangladesh Awami League in Tarakanda Upazila, declared inactive, after protests by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and National Citizens Party (NCP) leaders and activists on Thursday evening at around 8 PM.
During the protest, tires were set on fire inside the abandoned building, and parts of the walls were damaged. According to local sources, earlier that morning, a few individuals entered the burnt office, put up banners and national flags, and gave brief statements. Around 10 people briefly stayed in the building near Tarakanda Bus Stand before leaving quickly. A video of the morning event circulated on social media, generating discussion in the area.
During the “24th People’s Uprising,” after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, the three-story Upazila Awami League office was previously vandalized and set on fire. Since then, the building remained abandoned.
In protest of the morning event, Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and NCP leaders gathered in the evening. They set fire to tires and damaged parts of the walls. Later, they went to Tarakanda police station demanding the arrest of those responsible.
Al Noor Ayas, central coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, stated that the protest was a response to the attempt by a banned party to resume activities. He claimed that banners were removed from the site, and law enforcement was requested to take action.
Tarakanda OC Tanvir Ahmed confirmed that although tires were set on fire, the flames were extinguished quickly. No significant damage occurred, and the fire service’s help was not needed. The situation is now under control. Police remain alert to maintain law and order.
