The Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has sent a legal notice to Dr. Kamrul Hasan Mamun, a professor in the Department of Physics at Dhaka University, labeling his Facebook post regarding the murder of Yuva Dal leader Mahbubur Rahman as 'false and defamatory.' Mahbubur Rahman gained notoriety after a video showing him with a sharp weapon during a clash with Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) students went viral. Arman Hossain, Shibir's law secretary, issued the notice on Tuesday (July 15).
The notice alleges that Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun's Facebook post presented false information about Chhatra Shibir, causing significant defamation to the organization, which is known as an 'ideological body.' This, according to Shibir, constitutes a criminal offense under Section 500 of the Penal Code 1860.
Shibir has demanded that Professor Mamun withdraw his post and issue an unconditional apology to Chhatra Shibir and the nation within three days. Failure to do so will compel Shibir to take further legal action, including filing a BDT 100 crore defamation suit under the Penal Code 1860, along with other applicable laws in Bangladesh.
In his Facebook post, Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun alleged, "Shibir boys, who engage in politics in the name of religion, first shot and then slit the Achilles heel of the expelled Yuva Dal leader who went viral with a weapon, ensuring his death. Slitting Achilles heels was a hallmark of Shibir in the 80s and 90s." Referring to the current political instability and violence in the country, he further stated, "Whatever is happening now is a precursor or a trailer of what will happen after the election."
When contacted by phone today, Wednesday (July 16), after receiving Shibir's notice, Professor Kamrul Hasan Mamun told The Daily Campus, "I am in a meeting, I will talk about this later."
Earlier, last Friday (July 11), Mahbub was cleaning his private car in front of his house when three individuals on a motorcycle shot him. As Mahbub fell, the assailants used sharp weapons to hack him and slit his Achilles heel, ensuring his death.
According to police, local residents, and political sources, Mahbubur Rahman was involved in reckless behavior, land grabbing, and controlling land sale syndicates in the area after August 5 of last year. He was reportedly close to a central BNP leader and also had significant influence in the area due to his relation to an extremist leader. His dominance led to increased friction with local terrorists and extremists. Mahbub also became a target for multiple parties due to conflicts over drug trade control and extortion.
