At least 50 people were injured and 20 shops vandalized in a bloody clash between supporters of two rival BNP leader candidates during the Union BNP conference in Mallikerber, Rampal upazila of Bagerhat on Sunday (August 3). The clashes occurred in several phases from afternoon to evening and also caused damage to nearby houses.

According to local sources, long-standing tension existed between Abdul Alim Hawlader and Sazarul Islam Saju, both vying for the union BNP president position. On Saturday night, 11 of Saju’s supporters, including Shamim Hasan Polok, were allegedly beaten. In protest, Saju and Polok's supporters organized a human chain on Sunday afternoon.

Eyewitnesses reported that while the police-approved human chain was ongoing, supporters of Abdul Alim allegedly launched a sudden attack. In retaliation, Saju’s supporters fought back, leading to extensive chases, counterattacks, stone pelting, and vandalism of shops and homes. The violence continued even in the presence of police officers. Rampal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Atikur Rahman attempted to bring the situation under control. By evening, things began to calm down slightly.

During the incident, at least three journalists were injured while covering the event. They were Hedayet Hossain Liton from Dainik Dinkal, Mamun Ahmed from Deepto TV, and Sheikh Ahmed Tariq from Nagorik Television.

As of now, no arrests have been made. Police stated that additional forces have been deployed to maintain order and an investigation into the incident is underway.

Local BNP leaders said they could not reach rival candidate Abdul Alim for a comment, despite several attempts.

Residents have urged authorities to take immediate action to reduce political tension and ensure a peaceful environment in the area.
