Under Ishrak Hossain’s Leadership, Administrative Control Taken in Dhaka South City by Force

BNP leader Ishrak Hossain has taken control of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Yesterday, Tuesday afternoon, he held a meeting at the city hall auditorium with nearly 70 ward secretaries of DSCC and officials from 10 administrative zones.

Claiming himself as mayor without taking oath, Ishrak issued various directives at the meeting aimed at ensuring citizen services at the ward level. He instructed the formation of five-member committees in each ward, which will include former BNP-supporting councilors and prominent local figures.

He stated that through these committees, citizen services such as birth and death registration, inheritance certificates, character certificates, and other services will be provided. Additionally, ward secretaries were ordered to maintain regular office hours and provide services accordingly.

Dhaka South City has 75 wards, with one secretary responsible for each ward. Citizen services are managed through these secretaries.

Local government experts say that taking administrative control without taking oath is against law and regulations, and is an unprecedented incident. The silence from the Local Government Ministry on this issue has also raised questions.

For nearly a month, there has been a virtual deadlock at the city hall demanding Ishrak Hossain be recognized as mayor. Meanwhile, last Monday, he started giving instructions for dengue control after meeting with sanitation inspectors and is now holding regular meetings with administrative officials.

City hall sources say that today, Wednesday, he will meet with mosquito control supervisors from each ward and plans to hold meetings with officials from other departments subsequently.
