Meherpur Reporter: Two people were killed in a tragic head-on collision between two motorcycles near the Forest Department office on the Meherpur-Kushtia highway on Wednesday morning around 10 AM.
The deceased have been identified as Md. A.K.M. Mahfuzur Rahman (47), Assistant Engineer of the Public Health Engineering Department in Gangni, and Md. Akmal Hossain (20), a student of Meherpur Government College. Akmal was scheduled to sit for his HSC examination this Thursday. Mahfuz hailed from Gohorpur village, while Akmal was the son of Mabu Mir of Sheikhpara village.
According to eyewitnesses, Engineer Mahfuzur Rahman was heading toward Gangni for work, while Akmal Hossain was traveling in the opposite direction toward Meherpur. Near the district Forest Department office, both riders lost control of their motorcycles and collided head-on. Both were critically injured.
Locals rushed them to Meherpur 250-bed General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead upon arrival.
Mesbah Uddin, Officer-in-Charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station, told:
“Police were immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving the report. The bodies have been recovered and sent to the morgue. Legal procedures are underway.”
The incident has cast a pall of grief over the area, especially following the untimely death of HSC examinee Akmal, leaving his family and classmates devastated.
