Two Arrested in Rangamati Including Local Political Leader with 3,000 Yaba Tablets

Police have arrested two individuals, including a district-level leader of the Gono Odhikar Parishad, after recovering approximately 3,000 pieces of Yaba tablets during an anti-narcotics operation in Rangamati.

The arrest took place on Thursday evening (July 2) in front of the main gate of Mari Stadium in the city, during a coordinated police operation.

The arrested individuals are identified as Jalomoni Chakma (49), Vice-President of Gono Odhikar Parishad’s Rangamati district unit, and Notun Babu Tanchangya (38), a resident of Dhopppachhari area under Bilaichhari upazila.

According to police, acting on confidential information, Kotwali police conducted surveillance and a targeted operation in the Mari Stadium area. During the operation, two suspicious individuals were detained and searched, leading to the recovery of 3,000 Yaba tablets from their possession. Authorities suspect that the drugs were being carried for illegal sale.

Later that night at around 11 PM, police briefed the media at Rangamati Kotwali Police Station about the incident. The briefing was attended by Additional Superintendent of Police (Rangamati Sadar Circle) Tarek Sekandar, Officer-in-Charge of Kotwali Police Station Mohammad Jasim Uddin, and other senior officials.

ASP Tarek Sekandar stated that a case under the Narcotics Control Act is being prepared against the two detainees. He added that they will be produced before the court and police will seek remand for further interrogation.

Police also confirmed that anti-narcotics drives will continue across the region and strict legal action will be taken against those involved in drug trafficking.
