In the final stage of life, a person’s greatest support is usually their family. However, in Tangail, a heartbreaking incident has emerged where that very support turned into cruelty.
A nearly 100-year-old blind man named Mofiz Uddin was allegedly abandoned by his own relatives on the roadside due to old age and physical weakness. He was later rescued with the help of locals and administration.
Fish and Livestock Affairs Minister and Member of Parliament for Tangail-1, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, has taken responsibility for his medical treatment and welfare.
On Thursday (July 2) evening, locals found the elderly man crying helplessly beside the Bailla Bridge area in Tangail city. His identity was later confirmed, and police were informed.
According to local sources, Mofiz Uddin has been almost completely blind and unable to move without assistance for a long time. Due to age-related illnesses, he has become fully dependent on family members.
It is learned that Mofiz Uddin of Enaetpur village has three sons and three daughters. His wife died about eight years ago. One of his sons passed away, his eldest son is physically ill, and his younger son lives separately. Reportedly, he transferred his last remaining property—worth only 100 Taka—to two of his sons, after which he faced neglect.
Locals claim he used to live at his eldest son’s house. After the death of his son’s wife, his granddaughter and her husband allegedly became unwilling to care for him. On Thursday evening, they reportedly took him about three kilometers away and left him beside the road.
After receiving the news, Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku instructed Tangail police to take immediate action. Police rescued the elderly man and handed him over to his younger daughter, Rina Begum. Legal action has also been initiated against those involved, and the granddaughter has been taken into custody while efforts continue to arrest her husband.
The Minister has also announced that he will personally bear all expenses for the elderly man, including medical treatment, food, shelter, and other necessities. He also promised arrangements for old-age allowance and possible housing support.
Initially hesitant, the younger daughter later agreed to take responsibility for her father after discussions with the Minister.
Rina Begum said she rushed to the spot after learning about her father through neighbors and broke down after seeing his condition. She also confirmed she would now care for him with the Minister’s support.
Officer-in-Charge of Tangail Sadar Police Station Golam Muktar Ashraf Uddin said the elderly man was rescued and safely handed over to family members, and legal proceedings are ongoing against those responsible.
Minister Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said that abandoning an elderly person in this way is not only painful but a deeply inhumane act. He emphasized that caring for parents is both a moral and social responsibility, and assured continued support for the man’s treatment and well-being.
