Islami Andolon Bangladesh Amir Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has strongly criticized the trade agreement signed with the United States during the final phase of the interim government. He said the agreement reflects more dependence than national interest. He demanded that any international agreement involving national interest must be discussed seriously in parliament.

He made these remarks on Monday afternoon at a discussion meeting held at the central office of Islami Andolon in Purana Paltan, Dhaka.

He said relations and agreements with any country can be made prioritizing national interest. However, decisions should not be taken ignoring public opinion and national interest.

Speaking on local government elections, he alleged that party affiliates are being appointed in key positions after the government came to power. He called for appointments based on merit and neutrality.

Raising questions about national elections, he said local government elections must be held transparently and acceptably, and urged the government to organize them quickly.

Regarding the July National Charter, he said since the prime minister has promised to implement it, her statement can be trusted. However, he added that Islami Andolon is not silent on the issue and is now focusing on organizational strengthening.

Criticizing a ban on animal slaughter in West Bengal, he said such decisions are against humane behavior and condemned the move.

The meeting also announced mayoral candidates for Dhaka North and South City Corporation elections. In Dhaka North, Atiqur Rahman Mujahid, president of Islami Youth Movement, and in Dhaka South, Sheikh Fazlul Karim Maruf, publicity and dawah secretary of the party, were nominated.

He also said the party will contest local government elections independently and will not remain with the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat.

Explaining the decision to leave the alliance, he said differences emerged despite efforts to unite Islamic parties. He alleged that contact with other political parties was made without consulting Islami Andolon, creating mistrust.

He also claimed that BNP, Awami League, and National Party had at different times offered to bring Islami Andolon into alliances, but the party never engaged in politics for power or personal benefit.

Senior leaders of Islami Andolon, including Secretary General Maulana Yunus Ahmad and others, were present at the meeting.
