PNN News Desk | Dhaka:
On October 15, 2025, at 2:03 p.m., teachers under the MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme blocked the road at Shahbagh intersection, demanding an increase in their house rent and medical allowances, as well as the elimination of salary discrimination and ensuring teachers’ dignity.
The program began at 1:40 p.m., when teachers started their march from the Central Shaheed Minar carrying national flags and placards listing their demands. Before reaching Shahbagh, police attempted to stop them; however, the teachers broke through the police barricades and began their sit-in at the intersection.
Currently, the Shahbagh area is filled with slogans, as teachers display placards and banners to draw the government’s attention to their demands.
Their main demands include:
20% of the basic salary as house rent allowance
Tk 1,500 as medical allowance
75% of the festival allowance for staff members
Due to this movement, heavy traffic congestion has been reported in and around Shahbagh. Many commuters are using alternative routes to reach their destinations. Teacher leaders have announced that their demonstration will continue until their demands are met.
Meanwhile, Delwar Hossain Azizi, Member Secretary of the Alliance for Nationalization of MPO-Listed Educational Institutions, stated on social media that senior leaders of the National Coordination Platform (NCP) would arrive at the Central Shaheed Minar at 12:45 p.m., which caused a slight delay in the program’s start.
Yesterday, October 14, teachers attempted a long march, but police blocked their movement, forcing them to sit near the High Court area, causing traffic gridlock and severe inconvenience for commuters.
Teacher leaders have made it clear that their sit-in at Shahbagh will continue until the government fulfills their demands.
