Police have closed the Dhaka College gate and positioned themselves in between to prevent any untoward incidents. At the same time, a few students from the “Save Eden” movement are blocking the office of Dhaka College Principal and the interim administrator of Central University, Professor A K M Elias.
Newmarket Police Officer-in-Charge A K M Mahfuzul Haq stated that teachers are inside the college, while students are outside. Police deployment has been made to prevent any third party from complicating the situation and primarily to ensure everyone’s safety.
Student protester Mehedi Hasan said, “The seven historic colleges in the capital are fighting against long-standing exploitation and irregularities. The government promised to establish a ‘Dhaka Central University,’ but the promise has not been fulfilled for over a year and a half, so this struggle continues.”
He added, “A draft ordinance was issued in September. Some academic staff are not interested in providing proper education at the university. While the government aims to provide a model university for our welfare, teachers are opposing it, which is very shameful.”
Mehedi Hasan also mentioned, “Today, they deliberately tried to create a face-off between students and teachers to complicate the situation. We will not fall into their trap.”
Repeated attempts to reach Dhaka College Principal Professor A K M Elias for comments were unsuccessful.
