A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for Sumaiya Jafrin, wife of army officer Major Sadikul Haque, in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act. She was arrested on charges of involvement in a “secret meeting” linked to the banned organization Chhatra League.

On Thursday (August 7), the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka granted the remand after police requested seven days. During the hearing, the defense sought to cancel the remand plea, but the court approved five days instead.

According to the Detective Branch (DB) police, Sumaiya Jafrin was found to be connected to a secret meeting held near the Bashundhara residential area at a convention center. She was arrested on Wednesday from the DOHS area in Mirpur.

Joint Commissioner of DB Police, Mohammad Nasirul Islam, stated, “After confirming her involvement from various sources, we took her into custody for questioning.”

The police revealed that on July 8, a secret meeting took place at a convention center adjacent to Bashundhara, allegedly organized under the leadership of the banned Chhatra League. According to police, the meeting was attended by around 300–400 individuals, including former Awami League members, members of the banned organization, and retired government officials and employees. The meeting reportedly involved conspiracies against the current government and plans to create large-scale unrest in Dhaka.

On July 13, police filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Vatara Police Station in connection with the incident. Major Sadikul Haque was also named as an accused in the case and is currently in military custody.

The incident has sparked significant discussion in relevant circles. However, no official comment has yet been made by the government or the military.
