Bangladesh Student Federation has demanded swift justice for those involved in the attack on Shah Ali Mazar in Mirpur, Dhaka. The organization also alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing were involved in the attack. It also called on the Jamaat Amir to publicly apologize.
These demands were raised at a protest rally held on Monday afternoon at the foot of the Raju Memorial Sculpture at Dhaka University. The program was organized to protest attacks on mazars, shrines, and khankahs across the country and to demand state compensation for victims.
Speaking at the rally, central general secretary of the Student Federation, Soikat Arif, said that after the July period there have been continuous incidents of violence, riots, and attacks on people with differing opinions.
He claimed that attacks on minority communities, cultural organizations, and various institutions have not been effectively controlled by the government.
He said, “According to police and related parties, Jamaat-Shibir leaders were involved in the Shah Ali Mazar attack. The Jamaat Amir should apologize to the nation.”
He further accused the current government of failing to control violence and unrest and demanded immediate arrest of those involved and impartial investigation into previous incidents.
Other speakers included former president Golam Mostofa, Dhaka University unit president Sajib Hossain, Dhaka Metropolitan convener Al-Amin Rahman, Narayanganj district president Saidur Rahman, and representative Habibur Rahman from Sureshwari Darbar Sharif.
They said attacks on mazars and religious institutions are not only attacks on a group but also on communal harmony and culture.
A protest march was held after the rally, which circled different roads of Dhaka University campus and ended again at the Raju Memorial Sculpture.
