He passed away on Sunday (February 1) morning at Sheikh Hasina National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka. The incident was confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashulia Police Station, Nur Alam Siddique.
Police said that after being severely burned and under treatment for several days, Roni’s condition deteriorated, leading to his death. His body was handed over to his family, and the funeral and burial were conducted at his home.
Roni’s death has cast a shadow of grief over Jahangirnagar University’s campus. Amanullah Aman, the central organizing secretary of Chhatra Dal, expressed his condolences on social media, stating that he had planned to meet Roni just a few days ago, but tragically, the young man passed away prematurely.
The explosion occurred on Tuesday (January 27) around 9:30 PM on the second floor of a building in Islamnagar. The blast caused a loud sound, immediately spreading fire and burning four people inside. Among the injured were Saiful Islam Roni, Abdus Sobhan Ray, Hasinur, and Rahat.
Eyewitnesses said the fire spread rapidly before anyone could react. Severely injured Roni and Hasinur were quickly taken to the National Burn Institute in Dhaka, while the other two received treatment at a local hospital.
University medical sources stated that about 70% of Roni’s body was burned, especially his back, arms, and one eye, which were critically injured.
Residents and students have expressed fear and anger over the incident and are demanding immediate measures to ensure safe use of gas cylinders in residential areas.
