A twelfth-grade female student has been detained by Banshkhali Police in connection with the murder of Jagannath University student and Chhatra Dal leader Zubayed Hossain. During initial questioning, the student confessed that she killed Zubayed due to the breakup of her nine-year-old relationship.
The incident occurred on Sunday (October 19) at 4:45 PM in a building in Armanitola under Banshkhali Police jurisdiction. Blood stains were found from the ground floor to the third floor of the staircase, where Zubayed’s body was discovered lying collapsed. Locals informed the police, and approximately five hours later, the body was recovered and sent to Mitford Hospital morgue for autopsy.
The accused youth, Md. Mahir Rahman, studies at the Open University affiliated with Borhanuddin College. Police suspect that Mahir and his friend were also involved in Zubayed’s murder. Earlier, after a nine-year-long relationship, Zubayed’s girlfriend killed him because she was angry that he favored her over his former partner.
Zubayed Hossain was a student of the Statistics Department at Jagannath University and served as the president of the Cumilla District Chhatra Welfare Association. He had been living in a student dormitory in Armanitola, Old Dhaka, and used to tutor other students.
Following the incident, Jagannath University students and local residents surrounded the building and protested in front of Banshkhali Police Station. The students blocked roads and set tires on fire, demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits. However, nearly 15 hours after the incident, no formal case had been filed, causing discontent among the victim’s family members.
The victim’s elder brother, former Dhaka University student Enayet Hossain Saikat, said, “We are preparing to file a case against six people involved in this murder. They are the female student, her parents, her uncle, her boyfriend Md. Mahir Rahman, and another friend.”
Police reported that CCTV footage from a nearby building shows two young men running away. One was wearing black, and the other wore a pink T-shirt. It is believed that one of them is the student’s boyfriend. Authorities are reviewing additional CCTV footage from the surrounding area.
