Staff Reporter | PNN:
A new controversy has erupted surrounding the upcoming 74th Miss Universe pageant in Thailand. After Mexican contestant Fatima Bash was publicly humiliated, outrage has spread worldwide over accusations of misogyny and gender discrimination.

The incident occurred during a live broadcast, when Nawat Itsaragrisil, president of Miss Grand International (MGI), reprimanded Bash for allegedly not promoting Thailand enough. He even accused the Mexican pageant director of deliberately trying to tarnish Thailand’s image.

Nawat interrupted Bash mid-sentence, saying, “I didn’t give you permission to speak.” He then called security to remove her from the room. Other contestants stood up in solidarity with Bash, further escalating tensions among organizers.

Although Nawat later issued a public apology, criticism has not subsided. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum called the incident “an insult to women’s dignity” and praised Bash’s “remarkable courage.”

Bash posted on social media: “No one can silence our voices. We women are powerful, and this stage is our platform to speak.”

Miss Universe Organization President Raul Rocha condemned Nawat’s behavior and banned him from future participation, saying, “Intimidating or humiliating a female contestant is absolutely unacceptable.”

President Sheinbaum added, “Women are often told, ‘You’re prettier when you’re silent.’ But I say women are most beautiful when they raise their voices.”

Feminist activist Catalina Ruiz Navarro remarked, “Beauty pageants have long been tools to control and judge women’s bodies. But Bash’s protest shows that women are ready to break that structure.”

Former Miss Universe winner Sheynnis Palacios stated, “A crown should never be earned at the cost of a woman’s dignity.”

Following the incident, global support has surged under the hashtag #StandWithFatima.
Currently, 130 contestants from around the world are competing in Bangkok, with the final set for November 21.
