Political discussions have started anew surrounding former mayor Monzur Alam ahead of the Chattogram City Corporation election. Rumors that he may contest the upcoming mayoral election have become the center of attention.

Recently, speculation increased after his meeting with National Citizen Party (NCP) leader and Cumilla-4 MP Hasanul Abdullah at Monzur Alam’s residence in Kattali area of the city. Questions have arisen in political circles about whether he will contest the election as an NCP candidate.

However, no official announcement has yet been made regarding the matter. Although NCP leaders have not commented publicly, it is indicated that the issue is under internal party discussion.

Meanwhile, BNP’s potential candidate for the Chattogram city election is currently Mayor Shahadat Hossain. On the other hand, due to the suspension of Awami League’s activities, Jamaat-e-Islami or NCP candidates may become the main competitors of BNP.

According to political analysts, if Monzur Alam joins NCP, the competition in the election could become more intense. He reportedly has a personal voter base due to his long social and religious activities. At the same time, he may also receive support from sections of Awami League supporters due to his past involvement with the party.

Monzur Alam told the media that his meeting with Hasanul Abdullah was a courtesy visit, and there was no political discussion about election participation.

NCP Chattogram Metropolitan coordinator Riduan Hridoy said there is no confirmed information yet about his joining the party, and no central decision has been made regarding electoral alliances.

On the other hand, Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Mohammad Shahjahan said that there is currently little possibility of an alliance with NCP in local elections due to the absence of party symbols.

It is worth mentioning that Monzur Alam was elected mayor of Chattogram City Corporation in 2010 with BNP support. After losing the 2015 election, he announced his retirement from politics but has remained active in political activities at various times.
