Spain, currently ranked the world’s best team according to the latest FIFA rankings, has hinted at potentially withdrawing from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The tournament will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Spanish sports authorities have warned that if Israel participates, Spain may choose to pull out of the tournament.
Spain’s leading sports daily, Marca, reported that on Wednesday, during a congressional session, Socialist group spokesperson Patxi López raised the possibility of boycotting the World Cup in light of ongoing protests over Israel’s actions in Gaza. He stated, “Israel is now occupying the Gaza Strip by land. Remaining silent would mean being complicit in this brutality.”
López further added, “People starving are being shot while searching for food, children are dying, cities are being destroyed—all to fulfill the dreams of the wealthy. An entire nation is being annihilated—this is genocide.”
Spain’s potential decision could have significant political implications for the World Cup, especially if Israel’s participation is confirmed.
