Barcelona brought Aston Villa's winning run in the UEFA Champions League to an end with a convincing 3-0 victory at the Spotify Camp Nou on Tuesday (November 3).
Brazilian forward Raphinha scored twice, while Lamine Yamal added the other goal for the Catalan side.
The victory helped Barcelona bounce back after their previous defeat against reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The team also secured three valuable points in their battle to finish among the top eight in the league phase.
The hosts started the match with an attacking approach and took the lead in the seventh minute through Yamal.
The goal came after a misplaced pass from João Gomes. While attempting to clear the ball from his own penalty area, Gomes sent a pass directly into the path of Barcelona's young winger.
Yamal capitalised on the opportunity and beat goalkeeper Zion Suzuki to put Barcelona ahead.
With this goal, Yamal also claimed the record for the most goals scored by a teenager in the history of the Champions League.
His tally in the competition now stands at 14 goals. He moved ahead of Kylian Mbappé, who scored 13 goals as a teenager. Erling Haaland occupies third place on the list with 10 goals.
Aston Villa attempted to restore parity during the first half. Several efforts from Matty Cash and João Gomes were dealt with by Barcelona's defence and goalkeeper.
Meanwhile, Unai Emery's side struggled to move the ball out of their defensive area while dealing with Barcelona's attacking pressure.
Both teams created opportunities through counterattacks before the interval, but neither managed to score again in the first half.
Barcelona extended their advantage after the restart.
Raphinha received the ball from Fermín López, broke through the opposition defence and scored with a precise shot.
The Brazilian forward later completed his brace by getting a close-range touch on a cross from João Cancelo.
The second goal took his tally to 19 goals across all competitions this season.
Before the match, the traditional UEFA Champions League anthem was not played.
The decision was made as a mark of respect for Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died after suffering cardiac arrest following a clash during a Spanish second-division match the previous day.
After the match, Raphinha said he wanted to dedicate the victory to the supporters but did not wish to talk about football on such a day.
He also expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased player and wished them strength and courage during their difficult time.
The match was also a memorable test for Aston Villa manager Unai Emery.
In 2017, when he was managing Paris Saint-Germain, Emery experienced a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Barcelona at the same stadium.
This time, too, his team conceded an early goal and came under pressure. Ultimately, however, Villa were unable to withstand Barcelona's attacking threat.
