PNN News Desk, Dhaka:

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that the lack of accountability on social media has become a global crisis. He claimed that uncontrolled social media increases political and social instability and hinders democratic progress.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Bangladesh Federal Journalists’ Union (BFUJ) biennial council 2025 at the National Press Club on Friday, Fakhrul said, “Propaganda is being spread on social media in a way that seems like a deliberate attempt to create chaos. False information is circulated to demean people, and political leaders are targeted with fabricated campaigns, creating societal division and undermining democracy.”

He emphasized that while freedom of expression is the foundation of democracy, in the country, there is a tendency to view dissent as ‘enemy.’ “I may not agree with you, but we must respect your right to express your opinion,” he said.

Fakhrul asserted that BNP has always stood for multi-party democracy and media freedom, citing historical efforts by Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia. He also highlighted that the BNP’s 31-point manifesto clearly commits to full media freedom.

He urged journalist organizations to unite, stating, “Rights cannot be ensured by relying solely on political parties. You must speak strongly with owners and the government. Journalists must unite after 15 years of attempts to control the media.” The session was chaired by BFUJ acting president Obaidur Rahman Shahin and attended by leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami, National Press Club, and Dhaka Journalist Union.
