BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly criticized Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, stating, “Her cruelty and brutality will be judged one day. History will not forgive her. She is a stain on humanity.”
He made these remarks at a memorial event held on Sunday (20 July) at the mausoleum premises of the martyr President Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka. The event, titled “Mass Uprising 2024: National Unity and Democratic Journey — Everlasting Memories in Green Fields,” was organized by BNP’s affiliate Nationalist Farmers’ Party and the ‘We are BNP Family’ initiative.
During the program, a neem tree was planted at the mausoleum site in memory of those martyred in the July movement.
Recalling the anguish of a martyred mother, Fakhrul said, “A mother had dreams for her child’s future, but that child was shot dead. Even after falling, the body was taken away in a van and burnt alive. No independent state would allow such acts.”
He further added, “In 1971, we fought for an independent country where people could live safely. Yet, now, the police and administration of this state are killing and burning our children. Such cruelty and barbarism are unacceptable, and Sheikh Hasina cannot escape responsibility.”
Promising support to the families of martyrs and injured, Fakhrul said, “We will form a rehabilitation fund as a party. I will inform the acting chairman Tarique Rahman about this today.”
He also mentioned that the ‘We are BNP Family’ initiative has already begun some assistance activities.
Other attendees included BNP senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Joint Secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie, Farmers’ Party President Hasan Zarif Tuhin, General Secretary Shahidul Islam Babul, and ‘We are BNP Family’ convener Atikur Rahman Ruman, among others.
BNP stated that during the mass uprising of July 2024, many students and people were killed or injured by law enforcement gunfire. The party continues to hold ongoing programs demanding justice and remembrance for the martyrs.
