The High Court has postponed the central student council and hall council elections of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SHU). Voting was scheduled for January 20.

On Monday, January 19, a High Court bench consisting of Justice Fahmida Kader and Justice Md. Asif Hasan issued the order. Following a hearing on a writ petition, the High Court directed that the election be suspended for four weeks, during which it may be conducted.

During the hearing, barristers Ruhul Quddus Kajol, Rashna Imam, and Moniruzzaman Asad represented the petitioners, while Advocate Mohammad Hossain Lipu represented the university. The state was represented by Additional Attorney General Anik R. Haque.

Previously, one day before the election, eight BNP-aligned teachers resigned, citing administrative irregularities and incapacity. Nationalist Teachers Forum President Prof. Dr. Ashraf Uddin confirmed the matter in a press conference, urging others not to participate.

Meanwhile, Chhatra Shibir has warned of strict and continuous nationwide programs to ensure the election proceeds on the scheduled date. Central office president Nurul Islam Saddam stated, “SHU election must be conducted on the scheduled date. Free and fair elections must be ensured. Any political pressure, threat, or muscle power will not be tolerated.”

He added that nearly 9,000 students are eager to vote. All panels and candidates have reached out to students and are campaigning. Any attempts to obstruct the election will harm students’ legitimate rights and the election process.

With the High Court’s suspension, temporary unrest has emerged among students and the university. The situation is expected to continue until a new election date is announced within four weeks.
