Students of seven colleges have begun constructing an ordinance stage in the capital to demand the issuance of a decree on the proposed Dhaka Central University, based on the draft of the updated Dhaka Central University Act-2025. On Monday, January 19, at around 12 PM, work began in front of the main gate of Dhaka College.
Locally, the stage is being built using wood and bamboo on a footpath section of Dhaka College. Due to ongoing examinations, the number of students participating in the protest is limited.
Abdur Rahman, spokesperson for the seven-college university conversion movement, said four permanent ordinance stages will be constructed. Additionally, one floating stage will travel across the seven college campuses for public gatherings and cultural programs. Dhaka College, Eden College, and Badrunnessa College will have one or two stages; Bangla College will have one stage; Nazrul and Suhrawardy Colleges will share one stage; and Titumir College will have one stage in front.
Rahman stated, “If there is a negative update on the ordinance by Wednesday this week, the ‘March for Jamuna’ will be held that day. If the update is positive, students from four ordinance stages will gather on the floating stage at Science Lab on Thursday and parade through Dhaka city.”
Previously, the movement announced that from January 19 to 21, the mobile ordinance stages would travel to each campus. On January 22, students from all stages will gather at Science Lab intersection for a large assembly and procession.
In a press release, students apologized to Dhaka residents for temporary inconvenience and stated that they would resume regular studies once their movement goals are achieved.
