Leaders from various political parties, central executive council members of Jamaat, and Majlis-e-Shura members attended the ceremony. Strict security measures were observed in Moghbazar.
In his brief speech after the oath, Shafiqul Rahman emphasized national unity over political divisions for a “New Bangladesh.” He stated, “We must overcome majority-minority conflicts and move the nation forward on the basis of true unity. Such divisions do not exist in the developed world; we must overcome artificial divisions in our country too.”
He emotionally mentioned past “unjust treatment” of Jamaat leaders during previous governments, stating, “Prisons became our address multiple times. There was no real allegation against us, only protest against injustice.”
He humbly accepted his responsibility, noting that many capable and experienced leaders are in the party, and said only Allah knows why members elected him again.
Jamaat’s internal rules held secret voting across the country from 9 to 25 October, in which over 116,000 members voted. Receiving the highest votes, Shafiqul Rahman was elected for the third consecutive term. The annual session of Jamaat’s central Majlis-e-Shura, which began Friday, will continue until Saturday.
