Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that although the arrest of former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed is an important development for Bangladesh, the current government had little direct role in it.
Speaking to journalists before a meeting with leaders of an 11-party alliance at Sylhet Circuit House on Sunday night, he made the comments.
He said that the arrest was the result of an international process initiated against Benazir Ahmed and that the red notice initiative was not undertaken by the current government. However, he described the arrest as a positive achievement for the country.
He added that whether Benazir Ahmed will remain detained abroad or be brought back to face trial in Bangladesh depends on government sincerity and action.
He also commented on recent statements by India’s newly appointed High Commissioner, saying clearer explanations are needed. He called for parliamentary discussion on border push-in incidents and killings.
Criticizing a recent parliamentary remark made by an MP regarding opposition members, he said all members must act responsibly to maintain parliamentary decorum.
Regarding the current political situation, he said the opposition seeks to raise public demands through democratic and peaceful programs. If parliament fails to resolve issues, movement on the streets through constitutional and democratic means may continue.
He added that holding elections alone does not complete a government’s responsibility; success is measured by fulfilling public expectations and political commitments.
Leaders of various political parties also attended the meeting and shared their views on ongoing political issues and democratic rights.
