Islamabad has proposed establishing a formal partnership with Bangladesh to enhance cooperation in maritime transport. Pakistan’s Minister of Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhury made this proposal on Monday in London during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Shipping Advisor, retired Brigadier General M. Sakhawat Hossain.

The proposed partnership includes joint container and bulk shipping services for cargo, technical training programs, maritime security, skill development for seafarers, as well as mutual port-call facilities and strengthened high-level diplomatic and technical engagement.

Minister Junaid Anwar emphasized establishing an effective framework with Bangladesh through international platforms like the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), as well as regional maritime groups. He stated that increasing KPIT capacity, port modernization initiatives, and faster turnaround times will play a key role in boosting regional trade flows.

He further noted that close port-to-port cooperation would help overcome supply challenges, remove regional barriers, and strengthen commercial integration across South Asia. If implemented, the proposal could usher in a new era for Bangladesh-Pakistan maritime trade.
