PKK Surrenders Arms After Four-Decade Conflict; Erdoğan Declares New Era in Turkey

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has declared that the country has entered a new era after the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) began its disarmament process following a four-decade armed conflict that claimed more than 40,000 lives.

Speaking at a rally for his Justice and Development Party (AKP) on Saturday, Erdoğan said, "The curse of terrorism has entered the process of coming to an end." He added, "Decades of grief, tears, and suffering have ended. Turkey closed that chapter as of yesterday."

As part of this symbolic step, 30 PKK members burned their weapons inside a cave in Sulaymaniyah, northern Iraq, on Friday. At the ceremony, which took place in the Jasana cave in the Dukhan area of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region, senior PKK leader Bese Hozat read a statement. She said, "We are voluntarily destroying our arms; this is a step of our goodwill and resolve."

The PKK has been in an armed conflict with Turkish state forces since 1984. In May of this year, after a call from their long-imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan, the group decided to disarm and disband. In a video recorded earlier this week, Öcalan called the move a "voluntary transition from the stage of armed conflict to the stage of democratic politics and law" and referred to it as a "historic achievement." Despite being imprisoned since 1999, Öcalan remains a symbolic figure for the group.

The end of this conflict could bring widespread benefits for Turkey. However, it may also have regional impacts, especially with neighboring Syria, where the U.S. is an ally of Syrian Kurdish forces, which Turkey considers an offshoot of the PKK. In domestic politics, Turkey’s pro-Kurdish DEM Party, the PKK, and Öcalan have demanded more rights in Kurdish-majority regions from the Erdoğan government.

Further disarmament steps are expected, which will require coordination among Turkey, Iraq, and the Iraqi Kurdish regional government.
