Police have recovered 18 locally made weapons after conducting a raid at the residence of a leader of the banned Awami League in Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur. The accused person could not be arrested as he was not present at home during the operation. Law enforcement authorities are also investigating the issue of a family dispute behind the incident.

The raid was conducted at around 1:00am on Monday night (July 20) at the house of Abul Hossain Sardar, located in the old embankment area near Khaserhat Bazaar under North Charbanshi Union of the upazila.

Police said that based on secret information, they conducted a search operation at the house and recovered 18 locally made weapons, including ramda, machetes, and other types of sharp weapons. However, police claimed that Abul Hossain Sardar fled the scene after sensing the presence of law enforcement officials.

Local sources said that Abul Hossain Sardar previously served as the vice-president of Ward No. 5 Awami League unit under North Charbanshi Union.

Attempts were made to contact accused Abul Hossain Sardar, but his mobile phone was found switched off. Therefore, his statement regarding the incident could not be obtained.

Raipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nizam Uddin Bhuiyan said that Abul Hossain Sardar had a long-standing family dispute with his wife Khaleda Akter. He said that on Monday afternoon, when Abul Hossain went fishing in the river with his brother-in-law, Khaleda Akter informed police that there were weapons inside the house. Based on that information, the raid was conducted at night.

He said the recovered weapons were seized and taken to the police station. An investigation is underway to determine the actual reason behind the incident. Although there is an initial suspicion that someone may have attempted to frame him due to a family dispute, nothing can be confirmed before the completion of the investigation.

Police said that the source of the recovered weapons, the purpose behind keeping them, and whether anyone else was involved in the incident are also being investigated. Necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
