At Mandiata Government Primary School, located in the Tanguar Haor area of Tahirpur Upazila, Sunamganj, classes are currently being conducted by just two teachers. This has caused severe difficulties for students and significantly affected the quality of education.
The school, situated in Ward No. 9 of Sripur North Union, was established in 1952 and serves children from five nearby villages. During the monsoon season, many students travel to school by boat.
Although the school is approved for five teachers, it has never had a full staff since its establishment. In 2023, three teachers were temporarily assigned, but two later left due to transfers. The most recent addition, assistant teacher Mukhtar Hossain, joined on May 6, 2024, but is currently on medical leave.
As a result, assistant teacher Sanju Mia is handling classes for 152 students across five grades alone, while also serving as the acting headteacher. Any official work, monthly meetings, or visits to the Upazila office further disrupt school activities.
With no office staff, Sanju Mia is responsible for opening the school gates, raising the flag, ringing the bell, and performing all other daily tasks.
Fifth-grade student Md. Rabbul Akhanji said, “I am preparing for scholarship exams, but classes are irregular due to the lack of teachers, which causes many problems.”
Local guardian Moyna Mia said, “We are very concerned about our children’s future. They are losing interest in studies due to the lack of teachers.” Another guardian, Mosharaf Hossain, added, “My two sons study here. One morning I saw students just making noise. How can a single teacher manage them?”
Assistant teacher and acting headteacher Sanju Mia said, “It is impossible to teach 152 students alone. If new teachers are not appointed quickly, the students’ future will be at risk.”
Tahirpur Upazila Primary Education Officer Md. Suleman Mia stated, “Currently, one teacher is on medical leave. We will submit a request to the district education officer for the urgent appointment of new teachers.”
