A rickshaw mechanic named Belal Hossain (45) died after being seriously injured in a public attack in Tangail’s Gopalpur. He died on Friday night while being taken to Dhaka for treatment. Following the incident, the accused youth was beaten by locals and later rescued by police and admitted to hospital.
The deceased Belal Hossain was a resident of Suti Purbopara in the municipality area. He worked as a rickshaw mechanic and had been living in his in-laws’ area for a long time.
According to locals, around 4:30 pm on Friday, Belal was standing alone near the main road beside the Kalimandir Road area of Jalchhara residential zone in the municipal town. At that time, a young man named Jisan attacked him. Eyewitnesses said the attacker repeatedly struck him with an iron rod.
Severely injured, Belal fell on the road. Locals rescued him and took him to Gopalpur Upazila Health Complex. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment, but he died before reaching the capital.
After the incident, tension spread in the area. Angry locals detained the accused Jisan and beat him. Later, police rescued him and sent him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Locals say the attack has created panic and outrage in the area. However, the exact motive behind the attack is still unknown.
Gopalpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Anwar Hossain said the post-mortem of the body has been completed. A case has been filed and investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident.
