Acting Secretary General of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has said that anyone who engages in unethical activities using the party’s name will face strict action. He also urged party leaders and activists to remain connected with the people, engage in constructive activities and work to further strengthen the organisation.
Rizvi made the remarks while speaking to journalists after paying floral tribute at the graves of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, on Monday (August 24).
After taking charge as acting secretary general, Rizvi paid tribute at the graves of the two leaders accompanied by party leaders and activists. Leaders and activists from different levels of the party were present on the occasion.
Rizvi said that one or two individuals within the BNP may be involved in unethical activities. However, he said the party chairman had taken strict action against those who became involved in misconduct by using the party identity after August 5. He therefore urged party leaders and activists to stay away from unethical activities.
He said party leaders and activists must remain engaged in constructive activities and work to strengthen the organisation. He also stressed the importance of maintaining close contact with ordinary people if party leaders and activists are to fulfil their responsibilities as representatives of the people.
Regarding the party’s organisational activities, Rizvi said that one of his key responsibilities at present is to run the BNP in a disciplined and well-organised manner. He said he would work to ensure that the ongoing organisational activities are completed properly in accordance with the instructions of the party chairman.
Rizvi said the BNP had formed a government under the leadership of Tarique Rahman. He said the programmes announced by Tarique Rahman had been formulated by prioritising public interest, human welfare, social security and infrastructure development. He urged party leaders and activists to inform the people about these programmes and maintain regular communication with them.
He further said that when party leaders and activists remain connected with the people, there is less opportunity for them to become involved in unethical activities. He also said the BNP would not undertake any activity outside the interests of the people.
Regarding the local government elections, the BNP acting secretary general said leaders at the union, upazila and district levels would scrutinise potential candidates and extend support to qualified individuals. Although the elections would not be contested under the party symbol, he said party leaders and activists would have to work to ensure the election of qualified candidates backed by the party.
Referring to various surveys regarding the BNP’s popularity, Rizvi said that despite various propaganda and conspiracies, the people’s support for the BNP remains intact. He also commented that if the party can work in the interests of the people, the party-led government will not fail.
Also present at the tribute-paying ceremony were Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator and member of the BNP Chairperson’s Advisory Council Abdus Salam, Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, Youth and Sports State Minister and convener of BNP Dhaka North City unit Aminul Haque, BNP Joint Secretaries General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and Abdus Salam Azad, Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal President Rakibul Islam Rakib, and leaders and activists from various levels of the party.
