Former Councilor Al-Amin Hacked to Death in Bhairab, Relatives Allege Attack Over Property Dispute

Md. Al-Amin Saikat (45), a former councilor of Ward No. 1 of Bhairab Municipality and former municipal general secretary of the banned organization Jubo League, has been killed in an attack by miscreants. His family alleges that due to a long-standing property dispute, his cousin along with several others hacked him to death with sharp weapons.

The attack took place near the Social Islami Bank in the Tinpatti area of Bhairab municipal town around 11:45 PM on Sunday (August 23). He died on the way to Dhaka around 1:30 AM while in critical condition. According to family and local sources, Al-Amin was a businessman in Bhairab Bazar. Alongside this, he also ran a residential hotel business in the municipal town. At night, while returning home on a motorcycle from his hotel office, several people attacked him. Relatives said the attackers struck his head multiple times with sharp weapons and severed the tendons in his legs. Later, pedestrians saw him covered in blood and informed his family members. His wife Tania Khanam, along with locals, took him to a private hospital. There, the doctor advised taking him to Dhaka as his condition was critical. Later, he died inside the vehicle on the way to Dhaka. He was subsequently taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead.

The deceased Al-Amin was the son of the late Jasim Mia of the Arai Bapari lineage of the Bhairabpur Uttarpara area. The deceased's wife Tania Khanam said she spoke to her husband on the phone shortly before the incident, at around 11:30 PM. At that time, Al-Amin asked her to prepare food. A short while later, a person came to the house and informed her that her husband was lying bloody on the road. Going to the spot, she took him to the hospital with the help of relatives and locals. Tania claimed that while injured, Al-Amin told her that his cousins Jummon, Hasan, and three to four others had hacked and injured him. She also learned from her husband that his uncle Momin Mia and cousin Roudro alias Babu were involved in the incident. After that, Al-Amin lost consciousness. Tania further alleged that her husband had a long-standing property dispute with Momin Mia. She believes the attack was carried out in a planned manner as a result of this dispute. She demanded a proper investigation into the incident and exemplary punishment by bringing those involved under the law. The deceased's mother, Mina Begum, also raised allegations against several relatives and demanded justice for her son's murder. Al-Amin's friend Tamal Ahmed said they were together at Al-Amin's residential hotel until 11:30 PM on Sunday. Later, he left for home. A short while later, he received news of the attack on Al-Amin. However, he was not sure about who carried out the attack. The deceased's cousin Arafat alias Boro Mia stated that Al-Amin died on the way to Dhaka.

Later, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The body is expected to be brought to Bhairab after the autopsy there. Bhairab Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mahbubur Rahman said police learned about the attack on Al-Amin at night. Police are working to identify and arrest the attackers. CCTV footage from the scene is also being reviewed. He further mentioned that the body is currently in Dhaka, where the autopsy is ongoing. Subsequent legal action will be taken based on allegations after speaking with the family.
