The Jatiya Nagarik Party (JNP) has formally written to the Election Commission (EC), demanding to retain the ‘Shapla’ (water lily) as their party symbol. On Tuesday (October 7), the party sent the letter via email to the EC Secretary.
In the letter, JNP stated that the party has fulfilled all the requirements for registration with the Election Commission. However, since the existing EC guidelines do not include the ‘Shapla’ symbol, they were asked to select an alternative symbol. JNP, however, emphasized that they wish to be assigned any one of the following: ‘Shapla,’ ‘White Shapla,’ or ‘Red Shapla.’
The letter included seven different design samples of the ‘Shapla’ symbol.
JNP believes that the ‘Shapla’ symbol has become an emblem of the party’s political and emotional connection with the general public. Therefore, adopting any other symbol outside of this is not feasible for the party.
According to party sources, JNP considers the public’s love and trust to be reflected through the ‘Shapla’ symbol, and selecting an alternative symbol from the EC’s pre-approved list would contradict the party’s principles.
