EU Shows Interest in Electoral Process in Meeting with BNP Leaders

Michael Miller, the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh, paid a courtesy visit to BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The meeting took place on Wednesday (October 8) at 11:00 AM at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan, Dhaka, and lasted for nearly an hour. The discussions focused on Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections, the practice of democracy, and various issues related to Bangladesh-EU economic relations.

From BNP’s side, the meeting was attended by Standing Committee member and Foreign Affairs Advisory Committee member Dr. Abdul Moin Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, and Organizational Secretary Shama Obaid.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, “The main topic of discussion was the upcoming national election. The EU expects a fair, transparent, and competitive election in Bangladesh. They also expressed interest in contributing to the electoral process.”

He further added, “The EU is an important partner in Bangladesh’s economy. Their duty-free market access has played a significant role in the progress of our ready-made garments industry, and they have stated that this cooperation will continue in the future.”

The meeting also covered institutionalization of democracy, effective parliamentary function, media freedom, and human rights protection. Amir Khasru mentioned that the European Union is interested in supporting Bangladesh in these areas.
