Staff Reporter | PNN:

Although the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) maintained good relations with Jamaat-e-Islami following the popular uprising, recent events have created intense political tension. A rift emerged between the two parties after Jamaat signed a document in July while NCP did not. NCP Convener Nahid Islam’s recent Facebook post criticizing Jamaat has sparked fresh discussion.

Despite NCP maintaining “cordial relations” with BNP, Jamaat, and other parties, questions have arisen in political circles as to why NCP suddenly criticized Jamaat. NCP leaders claim that Jamaat’s PR (proportional representation) movement is nothing more than a political deception.

In his Facebook post, Nahid Islam wrote, “Jamaat’s PR movement, which is now colluding with the government and other parties, is merely a political tactic and an attempt to divert attention from the main objectives of the popular uprising.” He added, “NCP had faith in Jamaat, but they have strategically hijacked it.”

NCP leaders stated that Jamaat’s recent actions have created a sense of betrayal within their party. They claim that Jamaat’s political double-dealing is unacceptable to NCP. Specifically, Jamaat’s PR movement and their absence from the July document have widened the distance between the two parties.

Meanwhile, Jamaat responded through its central publicity and media department, stating that Nahid Islam’s remarks were “unclear and misleading.” They claimed that calling their PR movement deceptive was false and regrettable. Jamaat further asserted that their PR movement enjoys public support and that NCP’s accusations have no basis.

NCP leaders emphasized that they initially accepted Jamaat in “good faith” but now have taken a firm stance against Jamaat’s political tactics. The situation could become more complicated in the coming days, particularly regarding the relationship between Jamaat and NCP.
