PNN News Desk | Dhaka:

Teachers and staff of non-government educational institutions included in the MPO (Monthly Pay Order) scheme have been protesting since October 12, demanding three key demands: a 20% increase in house rent allowance (minimum 3,000 Taka), a medical allowance of 1,500 Taka, and a 75% festival allowance.

On Monday (October 20) at around 11:30 a.m., BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie visited the Central Shaheed Minar to show solidarity with the protesting teachers and staff. He urged the government to give special consideration to fulfilling the demand for a 20% house rent increase, stating, “5 percent is not enough. Special consideration must be given to you.”

Chowdhury Annie said, “Teachers and staff have been protesting under the scorching sun for the past nine days, which should not have happened. We have seen many times that teachers have to come out on the streets repeatedly to fight for their rights. If such a situation is avoided, teachers will not have to protest in the future.” He further added, “BNP has promised to nationalize education if it comes to power, as stated by the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.”

He also mentioned, “The interim government has already met some of your demands, but the 20% house rent increase has not yet been fully implemented. Therefore, I request the government to understand that 5 percent is not enough, and you should be given additional benefits.”

Meanwhile, Delwar Hossain Azizi, Member Secretary of the MPO Nationalization Alliance, stated, “We are carrying out a peaceful program and do not intend to create any disorder. However, teachers will not return to their institutions until their demands are met.” He warned, “If necessary, advisers may be changed, but we will not return until teachers receive their rightful benefits.”

Teachers and staff have announced that if their demands are not met, they will organize a “March to Jamuna” program in the afternoon.
