A Dhaka court has granted four-day police remand for two individuals arrested in connection with the brutal murder of scrap dealer Lal Chand, also known as Sohag, near Mitford Hospital in the capital.

The order came today (Saturday) following a hearing at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka. The two accused are Ruman Bepari (32) and Md. Abir Hossain (28), both residents of Keraniganj.

According to police, the duo was arrested during a raid in the Keraniganj area on Friday. They were presented before the court on Saturday morning, where police sought a 10-day remand for interrogation.

Although defense lawyers opposed the remand and requested the court to reject the plea, the magistrate, after hearing both sides, granted a four-day remand for each.

It is worth noting that on July 9, Lal Chand was brutally murdered in broad daylight on the busy road in front of Mitford Hospital. Eyewitnesses reported that a group of men attacked him openly—beating him, striking him with bricks and stones, and leaving him bloodied and unconscious. He was also stripped, and some assailants were seen jumping on him.

The day after the murder, Lal Chand’s family filed a case at the Kotwali Police Station. So far, police have arrested 14 individuals in connection with the case, of whom nine have already given confessional statements under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Investigators say the ongoing remand will focus on determining whether the murder was premeditated, identifying the masterminds, and uncovering the full motive.

The horrifying video of the killing, which went viral on social media, sparked widespread outrage. Human rights organizations and civil society groups have since demanded swift justice in the case.
