PNN News Desk, Dhaka:
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has stated that those seeking votes today on the “Balance Scale” symbol had opposed Bangladesh’s independence in 1971. He reminded voters that at that time, ordinary people had to flee their homes, and many homes were looted.

He made these remarks on Saturday (24 January) at an election campaign in Auliapur Union, Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila.

In the upcoming national parliamentary elections on 12 February, Mirza Fakhrul is contesting the Thakurgaon-1 (Sadar) seat as the BNP candidate under the “Rice Sheaf” symbol. His opponents in this constituency are Delwar Hossain of Jamaat-e-Islami on the “Balance Scale” symbol and Md. Khademul Islam of Islami Andolon on the “Hand Fan” symbol.

During the campaign, Mirza Fakhrul said that those asking for votes today had opposed the country’s independence in 1971. Addressing the people present, he questioned that during that time, people lost their homes and suffered looting, and these facts have not been forgotten.

Assuring that BNP will ensure peace and security if it comes to power, he said the fear and anxiety among the minority Hindu community would be eliminated. He emphasized that the country belongs to everyone, and all citizens have equal rights regardless of religion.

Referring to the sacrifices and struggles during the Liberation War, the BNP Secretary General said the people fought against Pakistan to achieve independence, and BNP has always stood for that independence. He said that they never fled the country and never will; they want to establish the rights of the people from within the country.

Addressing the Hindu community, Mirza Fakhrul further said that BNP has stood by them in the past, stands by them now, and will continue to do so in the future. He also promised that no one would face insecurity after casting their votes.

Calling on voters to vote for the “Rice Sheaf” symbol, he urged support for those who uphold the values of independence, law and order, agriculture, health, and social security.

At the campaign meeting, leaders and activists from the district, upazila, and union BNP and affiliated organizations also spoke.
