Meherpur University Plans to Begin Admissions from the 2025-26 Academic Year

Meherpur University plans to start its admission process from the current 2025-26 academic year. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has already approved two departments under a single faculty. However, before starting the admissions, some crucial activities, including faculty recruitment, need to be completed. The admission process will be conducted under the cluster system.

Sources say that there has been a long-standing demand for a full-fledged university in Meherpur. The government passed the Mujibnagar University Act, 2023, and appointed Professor Dr. Md. Robiul Islam from the Department of Social Work at Rajshahi University as the first Vice-Chancellor. Later, after the interim government took office, Professor Dr. Sheikh Bakhtiar Uddin from the Department of Botany at Chittagong University was appointed as Vice-Chancellor of Meherpur University on December 2, 2022.

On January 16, 2025, the government renamed Mujibnagar University to ‘Meherpur University.’ Despite the approval, the university has been using Meherpur Government College as a temporary campus due to the absence of a permanent campus for the past three years.

Professor Dr. Sheikh Bakhtiar Uddin, Vice-Chancellor of the university, told The Daily Campus, "We hope to start academic activities this year, but for that, the UGC and the Ministry of Education need to expedite the completion of faculty recruitment and other necessary processes."

The university plans to launch with two departments under a single faculty, although the exact departments have not yet been decided. Admissions will be conducted through the cluster system.

Regarding the new university’s admissions, Professor Dr. S.M.A. Faiz, Chairman of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission (UGC), could not be reached by phone. However, he recently told The Daily Campus, “Work is ongoing on the admission process for new universities. They will likely have two subjects, and they will definitely follow the cluster system.”

This is a major milestone for Meherpur University, which will begin providing higher education to students from next year as a full-fledged academic institution.
