Low Pressure Turns into Depression: Risk of Storm and Rain Along Coastal Areas

(File Photo: Collected)

The low-pressure system formed over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression, raising concerns of stormy winds, heavy rainfall, and 1 to 3 feet high wind-driven tidal surges in the coastal regions of Bangladesh.

In a special bulletin issued on Friday (25 July), the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) reported that the system over the northern Bay of Bengal and its adjoining areas has moved west-northwestward, becoming a depression. It is now located over the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh.

As of 6:00 AM Friday, the depression was located:

  • 265 km west-southwest of Chattogram Port

  • 265 km west of Cox’s Bazar

  • 130 km southwest of Mongla Port

  • 110 km southwest of Payra Port

According to forecasts, the depression is expected to move further west-northwest and make landfall over the coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh later today.

⚠️ Local Warning Signal No. 3 Issued

The ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra have been advised to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.

Due to the depression, gusty or squally winds are likely over the northern Bay of Bengal and coastal areas of Bangladesh. The sea will remain rough. All fishing boats and trawlers have been advised to take shelter immediately and remain there until further notice.

🌊 Possibility of Tidal Surges

Because of the combined effect of the new moon (Amavasya) and the depression, there is a risk of 1 to 3 feet high wind-driven tidal surges in low-lying areas and nearby islands/chars of:

Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Barisal, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar.

🌬️ Wind Speed Near the Depression Center

Within 44 kilometers of the depression’s center:

  • Maximum sustained wind speed: 40 km/h

  • Gusts or squalls: Up to 50 km/h

✅ Advisory for Coastal Residents

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has urged coastal residents to remain cautious and avoid going outdoors unless absolutely necessary. Local administrations have been instructed to stay on alert and take necessary preparations.
