Before the national elections, leaders of the Left Democratic Alliance (BDA) have described the Chief Advisor’s speech on the implementation of the July national charter as a “betrayal of the nation.” They alleged that the speech would create divisions among political parties and push the country into a prolonged crisis.
In a statement released on Friday evening, the alliance said, “If the agreement among BNP, Jamaat, and NCP is assumed to represent full consensus, it undermines the meetings of the Election Commission itself.”
The statement argued that the Chief Advisor’s speech on charter implementation, referendum, and constitutional reform council is unconstitutional. The constitution does not provide for issuing orders or holding referendums; the president can only issue ordinances. Issuing an ordinance for the implementation of the July charter is unconstitutional.
The Left Alliance leaders further noted that of the 48 constitutional proposals mentioned in the Chief Advisor’s speech, it was claimed that all political parties agreed on 30 of them. This is inaccurate; in reality, only 11 proposals had broad agreement.
The statement also protested decisions to allow a Danish company to build a port at Laldiar Char and lease the Pangao Terminal to a Swiss company. They announced nationwide protest programs for the coming Sunday.
Criticizing the government, the alliance stated that law and order in the country is deteriorating. Mob violence, harassment of women, extremist activities, and public murders are threatening everyday life. Factory closures, layoffs, restricted livelihood opportunities, and clandestine activities of fascist groups have created an insecure environment nationwide.
The statement concluded by urging the government: “Only the elected National Parliament has the power to amend the constitution. Announce the election schedule quickly, refrain from handing over national assets including ports to foreign companies, and take initiatives to restore law, order, and public safety.”
The statement was signed by BDA Coordinator Bazlur Rashid Firoz, CPB President Sajjad Zahir Chandan, General Secretary Abdullah Qafi Ratan, General Secretary of Revolutionary Communist League Iqbal Kabir Zahid, General Secretary of Democratic Revolutionary Party Mosrefa Mishu, BASAD (Marxist) Coordinator Masud Rana, and Executive President of Bangladesh Socialist Party Abdul Ali.
