At Least 20 Killed in Brutal Gunmen Attack on Villages in Nigeria

At least 20 people have been killed after heavily armed attackers launched a deadly assault on several villages in Zamfara State in northwestern Nigeria. The attack, carried out on Wednesday, spread fear throughout the region as gunmen reportedly opened indiscriminate fire on civilians.

According to AFP, Nasiru Lawali, a representative from the Sauna District of the Talata Mafara Local Government Area, said a large group of armed men entered multiple villages between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. local time. The attackers reportedly shot anyone they encountered, leaving numerous people dead and many others injured.

Violent attacks of this nature have become increasingly common across Nigeria's northwestern and central regions. Armed groups, commonly referred to as "bandits," have long been accused of raiding villages, stealing livestock, and abducting civilians for ransom.

Just a day before the latest massacre, security forces in Kwara State killed at least three suspected armed bandits during an operation and successfully rescued a kidnapped businessman alive, according to local media.

Security analysts say kidnapping has evolved into one of Nigeria's most lucrative criminal enterprises. Armed groups routinely target ordinary citizens, business owners, students, and teachers in exchange for ransom payments.

The country's security crisis has been further complicated by the long-running insurgency of Boko Haram in northeastern Nigeria. According to security assessments, armed groups collected more than $1.6 million in ransom payments during 2024 alone.

Earlier this month, dozens of students and teachers kidnapped from three schools in Oyo State were rescued after 56 days in captivity. Authorities arrested eight suspected kidnappers in connection with that operation, while several others were reportedly killed during security raids.

In a statement, the office of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said the kidnappers had planned to use the hostages to negotiate the release of several imprisoned group leaders. Defense Minister Christopher Musa stated that sustained military operations had successfully foiled those plans.

However, the latest attack in Zamfara once again demonstrates that Nigerian security forces have yet to fully contain the activities of armed criminal groups across vast parts of the country. Local residents have called on the government to take stronger and more effective action to ensure the safety of civilians.
