PNN Political Desk | June 21, 2025: AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Monju has expressed deep disappointment over the failure to reach a consensus on key national issues during the ongoing discussions among 32 political parties. Speaking to the media on Thursday (June 19) after a session of the National Consensus Commission (NCC), Monju stated that despite months of dialogue, no agreement could be reached on the formation of the NCC, the method of electing the President, or the term limit of the Prime Minister.
Monju remarked, “No matter how much we talk, the people expect us to arrive at a consensus. When those who have long oppressed citizens under the current state system show reluctance to reform, the public naturally loses hope.”
During the meeting, Monju shared AB Party's stance on presidential elections, arguing that the dignity of the presidency is more important than its powers, as the President symbolizes national unity. Criticizing the existing process, he said, “Currently, one can become President simply by showing submission to power. That must change.” The AB Party supports the proposal to form an Electoral College that includes members beyond Parliament.
On the issue of the Prime Minister’s tenure, Barrister Sani Abdul Haque, the party’s Joint Secretary General, emphasized the importance of setting limits to prevent a return to authoritarian rule. He proposed that no individual should be allowed to serve as Prime Minister more than twice, whether consecutively or through other arrangements.
Regarding the establishment of a bicameral legislature, Sani stated that although the AB Party initially believed Bangladesh lacked the political culture for a bicameral system, the party has revised its position in the interest of national consensus and now supports the initiative.
As political uncertainty lingers, the AB Party has called upon all parties to prioritize the people's interests and work towards meaningful political reform and institutional change.
